Beware the toast black hole of doooooom

Tuesday, September 27th, 2011

Well as one best man arrives in from South Africa (He lives in S.A with his husband), the other best man heads away on vacation!

To celebrate the arrival of said B.M we had a “few” drinks last night, needless to say getting up at 6am for work was just torture! But I did have a chuckle when I got in to work, total dizzy fool I am ! Oh my I was so embarrassed.

I was standing in the cafeteria and I was putting some bread in the toaster to make toast. It’s one of those machines with a belt on the inside like a converyer belt, anyways, the bread went in.. but no bread came out. So I’m thinking maybe the bread is stuck in the machine, so I put more bread in…

No bread came out.

I was thinking is this the Bermuda Triangle of Bread or what !

So after 5 slices of bread went in to the toast black hole to try and push any toast that was stuck, I discovered the little slide shute thing wasn’t pushed far  back in enough to catch the bread…and there was all the bread behind the machine like a little bread mountain.

MORTO so I am!

So today I’m feeling a little tired and humble at my sillyness.

It’s like an episode of Blue Peter around these parts of late.

I’ve searched high and low for some Asian-esque decorations so I’ve decided I’m going to make some bunting myself. For this I will need

  1. Various different colored cards that you can print on to.
  2. Colored ribbon.
  3. A Printer.
  4. Chinese / Japaneese symbols which you can easily get of the web.
  5. Patience.
  6. A best man / minion to do the work.
Once I’ve the sorta final product done I’ll post a picture
Then there is the seating plan which will include
  1. sand
  2. picture frames
  3. buddhas
  4. stones
  5. lucky bamboo
  6. and yoga
I hope the list above for the seating plan doesn’t give the game away ..

Sweet Temptation….

After all the stress of late, I decided to splash out a little. Go wild on a whim!!! So I was meandering around town and I just happened to pass  www.thesweetemporium.ie on Duke Street just of Grafton street, and I decided to get some treats for our guests for the big day. I’m sure they will all be very thankful.

NOW, It’s got flip all to do with theme of the day which could be best described as 1) erratic and mainly 2) Asian.

But sure it’ll be a nice treat for our guests on the day when they go to sit down at the din din tables. I asked for her to go to town and use her creative streak – so I’m sure it’ll be a surprise to me when I see it all.

Anyways I blabble, the shop is in town, it’s dead central, they did me a great deal and ask for Audrey she’s a legend and I’m she’ll look after you – tell her James sent ya! (that reminds me I should have asked for sample’s for myself – d’oh!)

Rant Alert!
I was seeing red yesterday. To start off with Sunday drivers irate me to no end. I mean cars have gears, introduce yourself people to 3rd and 4th gears ! Then husbear to be was driving all over the place in to the city center, I mean how difficult is it to go in to the center of town and find a car park space… well the other half was experiencing some sort of Krypton Factor challenge yesterday, I was only short of doing a Hyacinth Bucket passenger seat act of telling him HOW he should drive. You’ve no idea how much I was biting my lip at this stage adn the real sagas had yet to begin.
So in to Marks and Spencer’s we go. Luckily my cousin works there and she gets lovely staff discounts to use, we just happened to have a 20% voucher for yesterday. As we wanted nice fitting shirts we knew we’d be getting them in M&S and we really need two of them each. Well there we were with all our purchases, if you bought one shirt (each were €54) you got a 2nd half price, and if your intelligent enough to realize by now that we got 4 shirts you’d have figured out that one was basically free (remember this for further on). So as husbear has a slightly fatter neck than me he needed a 16.5 neck, and the last one he needed was on a dummy – so lucky him the nice lady let him buy it for €0.01c (remember this for later) so long as he made a donation in to the charity box at the til. No biggie here we were quite lucky as this shirt was €54, bargain! So away we go and pay, and the grand total comes to €401.01 (the shirt was one cent remember) we the guy at the til scanned our little voucher and the price went down to €354.01. Now I knew at this stage something was wrong, so I even got the guy on the til to check for me. But when we left I just knew something wasn’t right. Away back in to Customer Service I went. This is where it all went wrong.

To start with I didn’t get a good vibe from the lady on the till. I didn’t get the feeling that she really understood what she needed to do. She herself was Irish so we didn’t have a language barrier – but she kept complaining about having to fix someone else’s mess.

She voided and refunded my card, and I asked her there and then how long the refund would take, only earlier that morning I transferred€500 on to my card to pay for it all, her reply was she wasn’t sure….. I can’t hear a collective sigh of ugh ohh from you all at this point.

Back to the scanning of EVERYTYHING again, and applying the 20% discount.. and we have the same issue back to €354.01 – basically we got one shirt of €54 off the total, no 20% to be seen.

Everything was voided again and re-scanned and still the same issue, no discount. A manger was summoned… no sign of manager… At this stage I’m there an hour now, other half had gone to do the food shop.

What’s that in the distance, at last the manager appeared. He got the low down, and made the AMAZING discovery of voided the shirt for €0.01 and low and behold the discount went on to everything. So the grand total came to €266. So payment time now… BUT I know what you’re thinking.. the refund. We’ve all been there and we all know that refunds take time. Oh yes they can take the money out of your account lightening fast but for some reason they are a tad slower to do the refund. Sure enough those two words… card declined appeared on the screen of the machine. The very intelligent manager asked if I wanted to put some items back and just get what I really needed (the 20% discount was only for Sunday by the way!) and still my card was declined.

Right – time for plan B.

I had to get the items put on lay away, march, no stomp down to the other half, buy our food rations, bring them back to the car park, make another trip back to Marks, and on the way consult the hole in the wall for available funds. SO between me and himself, we had to do the half on cash and half on a pre paid credit card. Two hours of my life I will never get back !

Damn you M&S !! Sure it’s no wonder I’ve the tension headaches and body that is one massive knot! Worn out so I am!

On the bright side we did save over €100

I’m Liza with a Z, not Lisa with an S…

If the title of this rant is puzzling you, skip on to the end.

I’ve got a real problem with one vendor for the wedding (yes I’m calling it a wedding because I’m in one of those moods and can’t be arsed saying Civil Partnership any more because it’s the same family woes, same stress, same bills, same R.S.V.P  C.R.A.P It’s a wedding so deal with it !)

SHE KEEPS GETTING MY NAME WRONG! (and yes I am aware I am typing in upper case which could be deemed as shouting but ya know what I’m spending a lot of money on my big day so beatch get my name ROIGHT!)

I’m not sure if it’s the fact that it’s harder for her to remember two grooms names, or if it’s the fact that people say we kinda look alike, but I am not impressed at all, and I don’t even think we look at like at all !

I am spending a lot of money, she is getting on my tits! It doesn’t bode well if a vendor who is suppose to remember all the little details doesn’t even get my name right!

Not Impressed Dot Com !

But on the bright side it does remind me of this little number… Liza with Z - trust this gay to use a song with dramatic effect to show the importance of getting names right !

If you care to see “how alike” we are cast your eyes here!

Stressed to the max!

I’m not sure if the wedding has made stress levels any more pronounced, but I had to have physio on Saturday just gone as I was in agony with tension headaches. Again in the theme of the wedding I wanted acupuncture… yes that’s right.. as if I’ve not dealt with enough little pricks lately I wanted someone to stab me with a few more.

Instead what I got was the Physio, and an hour of my body twisted and contorted to help reduce the knots and tension. My poor body is one giant massive knot, not sure if its’ a good or bad thing but the Physio lady said she’d never seen someone so knotted ever before. I was barely able move my neck before I went in, but €55 and one hour later, I left and I was a dead ringer for Quasi Modo. I “had” to have a long hot bath to soak my muscles, I may have just done 10 rounds in a boxing ring and saved some money. She wants me back again next Saturday , is she out of her god damn mind. I’m not going through that ever again !

The best cure I know for tension headaches is 1) a baseball bat 2) a bottle or two of wine and 3) someone to hit !

Alternative weddings.

Wednesday, September 21st, 2011

For all those people out there who are having something different for their big day check out the  Alternative Wedding Event. It gave me some inspiration for our own big day.

You should also check out One Of A Kind Weddings on facebook and on take a look at www.oneofakindweddings.net

After one very successfull wedding fair in The Guinness Storehouse last year this time the fair is heading to Cork.  Check out their press release below

I was more taken back about the CSO figures that more and more people are using civil marriages instead of church marriages.

Want your wedding your way – then the Alternative Wedding Event is for you!

Getting engaged and planning your wedding should be a happy time but for many couples it turns out to be an agonising one, as they compromise their way to the big day. As such, following the success of the first Alternative Wedding Event, in February 2011 (partnered with the Guinness Storehouse), One of a Kind Weddings have partnered with the Hayfield Manor Hotel to bring the Alternative Wedding Event to Cork. This quirky and cool wedding event is happening on  Sunday 2nd October 2011. It is the first of its kind in Cork – an event aimed specifically at Couples wanting to create a wedding as unique as they are – whether they are gay, straight, catholic or no faith!

Recent changes to legislation allowing people to marry in venues other than churches and registry offices, as well as the introduction of the Civil Partnerships bill, have influenced a shift in attitudes of Irish couples to their big day.  In fact, recent CSO figures suggest that civil marriages are set to outstrip church weddings within the next year.

Despite these changes, most wedding events and packages still expect that couples will be happy to jump aboard the wedding conveyor belt to carry on down the traditional route of church and hotel.  As such One of a Kind Weddings was established to bridge this gap and help couples create the wedding of their dreams.

“When people fall in love and decide to get married they start off with a picture in their head of what they want their day to be like. However with the amount of information out there sometimes they lose their way and get caught up planning the wedding that everyone expects them to have” says Linda McAllorum, Perfect Irish Weddings. Linda is a wedding planner with more than five years experience. Her partner, Andrea Carroll, is a highly experienced environmental consultant, writer and blogger (Peachy Green Life) on green issues.  Together they formed One of a Kind Weddings to help people rediscover the potential in their big day and create the wedding of their dreams.

Some people want to get married in a castle, on a beach or in a garden, have their union blessed by a celebrant or create a Halloween themed banquet. The Alternative Wedding Event will give you all the inspiration and contacts you need to make this dream come true.  The event will be held on Sunday 2nd of October between 12 noon and 5pm. The venue itself (The Hayfield Manor Hotel) is also a fabulous wedding venue and perfect for a sumptuous and extravagant wedding or civil partnership.  On the day there will be seminars, workshops and discussion forums, as well as competitions and spot prizes. Much more than the average wedding fair this event will help you understand the options for weddings in Ireland – much more than the traditional church and hotel routine. Tickets are 7 Euro on the door, but can also be bought at a discount price online atwww.oneofakindweddings.net (2 for 10 Euro).

So here is the guest book, or rather the guest picture. Enough spaces for about 100 people to sign their names.

Last hurdle here we come.

Sure we are nearly there. Sorry I’ve not blogged in a long time, but sure life is life and we have to try and get as much done. As you can imagine if i can go wrong it has gone wrong, big breath in and here we go ….

I picked up the wedding cake toppers on Saturday, they are brilliant, Bernadette is magic ! We are so chuffed by them.  Once we are done with them I need to get them put in to a glass or plastic container.

We sorted the cakes out, so we are getting 8 dozen cup cakes with different colors representing the different flavors. We have a top rainbow layer for us to cut – sure we may as make it a little gayer!!! We had such fun when Anna from www.gigglecakes.com came over and we sampled lots of her cup cakes, mum of course had to come over and try the samples too. We couldn’t decide on a specific flavor so we got em all ! Greedy gays!

My suit is to die for – a Marks and Spencer’s special – a lovely cousin of mine has bought it for me as my wedding gift. Score or what ! Now I just got to accessorize myself, I need some shiny shoes and a daper belt, and 2 or 3 shirts for the day itself – need to allow for any perspiration. Which reminds me in-case you don’t know Anhydrol Forte topical roll on helps combat sweating. It’s a must ! I use it from time to time – but you have to follow the instructions otherwise you can seriously do damage to those arm pits, it’s available at nearly all chemists.

We are using www.rosiedays.ie for other floral bits. We are going for lucky bamboo, orchids, lillies, birds of paradise… can’t wait. We are keeping a little bit of the old traditions, Mum is getting herself a corsage (not sure if that’s how it’s spelled). I’m going to try make my frozen Buddha’s again – this time I’m going to color the water and see what it comes out as, maybe Sinead can use them as part of the arrangements.

We also were in Berlin last weekend and picked ourselves up a few decorative items to use in the hotel. We found this cool Asian store in Der Mitte near Alexander Platz with these cool hanging lanterns all at €5 each, and also these decorative wind flags – also €5 – we managed to get pretty much all bar violet from the Rainbow flag. Either the place will look like a drag queen exploded or it will look pretty authentic - minus the Asian people!

Also got our wedding guest book today – need to get it mounted – it’s certainly something different that other people will never have seen before.

Of course it’s not been all good – we’ve had some other logistical issues. We discovered that the hotel have changed bar/event managers three times, and when you are called to a meeting at the hotel where there you are as the lovely couple wanting to spend your hard earned money and opposite you is the event manager and fiancial controller – it’s a bit daunting !

Turns out the guy who initially booked us in, well he’s not there any more! Apparently the quotes we were given were/are very low, and they would not normally be that low. Begs the question what on earth would they be charging otherwise.  So we’ve had to compromise on a few things, such as the budget. Some items are going to cost a bit more because our guest list has increased which impacts on oh… well everything !!!!

My plan is to have either a name label tag around the punch / wine glass to tell people what table they are at or we will maybe call people by either the color of the Buddha I put in the arrangements, or we will put different color lillies in the table center pieces that will be on the tables. I’m sure I will come up with something creative closer to the day.

So we were going to have 80 people but now that’s increased to 94, so we will have to go over the seating plans and work out how we can get more people in to a smaller space. On top of this there is another 70 to 90 people coming to the afters.  So that food part of the budget is creeping up too!

We’ve had some music issues too – our original singer was double booked, the person she recommended was in my opinion not as good.  Then we had found another fantastic guy called Sean Boland – and was priced at a great rate. But turns out he was also double booked. Now we had a bit of a mad dash to find a singer who can sing some Jazzy numbers for about an hour. We did find this great 2 piece band called Floozy and Bluesey – check them out here  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nJwlxmjZPtA - who are going to sing a few numbers. Thankfully it’s a wedding where there are no kids because they do sing some risky numbers, they are normally a Burlesque band.

For the moment I’ll avoid the family talk – because that’s a whole book in and of itself. but lord above what is it about weddings that brings out the worst and best of some people ! Families eh!

I know there’s more than I’m forgetting to mention … there’s way too much to try and remember.

Now where did I put that Valium?

It’s all go go go.

So last night it was one of them mad nights.

Mother was over, so to was the florst from RosieDays and Anna from Gigglecakes, oh yea and Tom too!

So we’ve decided on the table flowers and other bits and bobs, and the cakes…yummmmmmmmmmm so we have a layered rainbow cake for the top tier and also 8 dozen cup cakes of an array of flavours. (Psst the chocolate is fab!). Mother had a great time sampling some of the freebies Anna brought over.

THEN I get a lovely email from Bernie from  www.happy-cake-toppers.com , she had finished make the cake topper I’d ordered.

And here it is ! I love it. It represent me and Tom. I love Yoga so there I am in my tree pose, and Tom is in the film business so he has his clapper board, and our two little dogs Socks the Jack Russell cross and Simba the miniature poodle.

I’m so excited I could almost squeal !!!
